Remy Debes is a Professor and Chair of Philosophy at the University of Memphis, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a B.A. from Boston University and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. His research focuses on Moral Theory, History of Ethics (particularly Adam Smith and David Hume), Human Dignity, Respect, and Metaethical Sentimentalism. He has authored or edited books such as Dignity: A History and contributed to journals like British Journal for the History of Philosophy. His awards include the Alumni Distinguished Teacher Award (2009, 2019) and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Advising (2011). He served as Editor of The Southern Journal of Philosophy (2017–2024) and Chair of the Department of Philosophy (2019–2024). His recent work explores empathy’s role in moral judgment and the historical roots of human dignity. He also received a $72K Templeton Foundation grant (2014) for his project on understanding as respect.
Debes has held leadership roles, including Co-Chair of a Presidential Steering Committee to establish the University Middle School (2019) and Secretary/Treasurer of the International Adam Smith Society. His teaching spans courses like Ethical Theory and Philosophy of Law. Recent activities include keynote lectures at Fordham University (2025) and the Stephenson Institute residency (2024).
His research integrates historical and contemporary ethics, emphasizing empathy, dignity, and social justice. Key themes include the philosophical foundations of human dignity, moral psychology, and the Enlightenment’s legacy. He balances academic leadership with mentoring, highlighted by the 2024 GSA Mentor Award for graduate advising.
