Remo Tilanus is a Research Professor at the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory, where he serves as Operations Manager for both the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Consortium and the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) telescopes on Kitt Peak and Mount Graham. With a Ph.D. from the University of Groningen (1990), he has established himself as a leading expert in sub-millimeter radio astronomy and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), contributing significantly to the groundbreaking imaging of black holes.
Dr. Tilanus specializes in observatory operations and advanced data reduction techniques, with research interests spanning black holes, observational cosmology, galaxy evolution, and the interstellar medium. His technical leadership has been instrumental in the EHT's successful observations since 2013, including the historic 2019 release of the first image of a black hole in M87 and subsequent imaging of Sagittarius A* in our Milky Way. His current work focuses on developing higher-resolution "movies" of black holes to study dynamic accretion processes and jet formation.
As evidenced by his extensive publication record (over 200 papers with more than 24,000 citations), Dr. Tilanus's research has significantly advanced our understanding of black hole physics. His recent work explores the polarized structure of black hole shadows, multifrequency jet studies, and the development of next-generation techniques for submillimeter interferometry, positioning him at the forefront of observational black hole astrophysics.

Dr. Tilanus plays a critical role in the technical operations and strategic development of the EHT, having served in various leadership capacities including head of the technical working group, project manager, and now operations manager. He is also actively involved in the Black Hole Explorer (BHEX) project, which aims to extend EHT capabilities into space to detect black hole photon rings for precise measurements of black hole spin and mass. His operational expertise spans both the EHT global network and the ARO facilities, making him uniquely positioned to advance cutting-edge observational techniques in high-resolution radio astronomy.
