معرفی
Reinhard Genzel is a Full Professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley (since 1999) and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (since 1986). He holds an honorary professorship at Munich University. His research focuses on black hole dynamics, galactic center studies, and relativistic astrophysics.
Education:
- Bachelor's in Physics at University of Bonn
- Doctorate at Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (1978)
- Postdoctoral work at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (1978–1980)
Research Interests: Genzel pioneers observations of supermassive black holes using infrared interferometry and adaptive optics. His work includes precise stellar velocity measurements near the Milky Way’s center, gravitational redshift detection, and validation of general relativity predictions. Key innovations involve instruments like Gravity and Sinfoni at ESO’s Very Large Telescope.
Awards:
- 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics (shared with Penrose and Ghez)
- 2012 Crafoord Prize
- 2008 Shaw Prize
- 2003 Balzan Prize
- 1990 Leibniz Prize
Advising & Labs: Leads the Galactic Center Group at Max Planck Institute, focusing on black hole dynamics and relativistic effects. Collaborates with international teams on gravitational wave astronomy and stellar kinematics.
