Reiner Bleher is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Northwestern University and serves as BioCryo Facility Manager at the NU ANCE Center. He has held continuous faculty positions at Northwestern since 2010, progressing from Research Assistant Professor to his current rank in 2022.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from Ulm University, Germany (1998) with thesis on 'Immunocytochemical localization of phosphorylated and unphosphorylated histone-H1 in different cell-cycle phases of HeLa-cells'
- Postdoctoral research at Ulm University (1998-2000)
- Concurrent postdoctoral work at Ulm University and University of Porto, Portugal (2000-2003)
- Postdoctoral research at University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003-2006)
Dr. Bleher specializes in electron microscopy and microanalysis of biological/soft matter samples under cryogenic and ambient conditions. His expertise spans cryo-EM facility management, immuno-electron microscopy techniques, correlative microscopy systems, and biomineralization studies. He has developed DNA labeling methods using PNA/LNA/TFO probes and metal colloid-based multiple labeling systems for advanced imaging applications.
As BioCryo Facility Manager, he oversees Northwestern's cryogenic electron microscopy infrastructure within the NU ANCE Center, supporting biological specimen characterization and soft materials research.
