Professor Reimund Leicht serves as Professor of Jewish Studies with a focus on the history, religious history and philosophy of Judaism at the Free University of Berlin since August 2024, where he also directs the Institute of Jewish Studies. Previously, he was Senior Lecturer (2009-2024) and Head of the Department for Jewish Thought (2022-2024) at the Hebrew University Jerusalem.
Education:
- Doctorate in Judaic Studies (FU Berlin, 2004)
His research concentrates on Jewish philosophical traditions across historical periods, with particular expertise in Hebrew linguistic development, religious-cultural evolution from antiquity through the Middle Ages, and the intersection of Jewish and Christian intellectual history as evidenced in works like those of Johannes Reuchlin. His methodological approach combines codicological analysis with theological and sociological perspectives on Jewish written culture.
Leicht currently leads the DFG-funded research project 'PESHAT in Context' in collaboration with Professor Giuseppe Veltri of the University of Hamburg, examining contextual frameworks for traditional Jewish scriptural interpretation methods. He also serves as co-editor of the academic journal ALEPH: Historical Studies in Science and Judaism alongside Resianne Fontaine of Amsterdam.
