Reima Välimäki is an Academy Research Fellow (2023–2027) at the University of Turku's Department of Cultural History and holds the title of Docent. He obtained his PhD in Cultural History (2016) from the same institution, focusing on late medieval heresy and the inquisitor Petrus Zwicker. His research integrates digital humanities methodologies with traditional historical approaches, emphasizing computational analysis of medieval texts and polemical literature.
Currently, he leads the PERSECUTIO project, studying the causalities of polemics and persecution in late medieval Europe, and is an associate member of the DISSINET project exploring Waldensian inquisitions. Notable publications include Heresy in Late Medieval Germany (2019) and edited volumes on medievalism in Finnish and Russian contexts (2022).
He teaches digital history modules and has coordinated courses on premodern cultural history. His work extends to public history projects like Vihan pitkät jäljet (on hate speech) and Vammaisuuden vaiettu historia (on disability history). Awards include the Academy of Finland Research Fellowship.
Active in academic outreach, he writes a blog (Officium inquisitionis) and reviews books for journals like H-Soz-Kult and Sehepunkte. His research spans codicology, palaeography, and the Great Western Schism, with a focus on quantifying historical sources of persecution and polemical discourse.
