Regina Birner is a Professor and Head of the Department of Social and Institutional Change in Agricultural Development at the University of Hohenheim, Germany. She also serves as Deputy Managing Director of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in the Tropics (Hans-Ruthenberg-Institute) and Dean of Studies for the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. Her research spans agricultural policy, digital innovations, food security, and institutional economics, with over 25 years of fieldwork in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
She holds a PhD in 'Socioeconomics of Agricultural Development' from the University of Göttingen and a habilitation in Agricultural Economics. Her academic background includes studies in Agricultural Sciences at TU Munich-Weihenstephan.
Birner's research focuses on:
- Sustainable Agricultural Development: Policies for food security, climate resilience, and biodiversity conservation.
- Digital Transformation: Smartphone apps, e-governance tools, and mechanization impacts in smallholder systems.
