Regina Bateson

Regina Bateson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Colorado Boulder and an Associate Professor (on leave) at the University of Ottawa’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. Her research focuses on political violence, democracy, vigilantism, and threats to rights and democracy, with geographic expertise in Guatemala, Central America, and the United States. She holds a PhD in Political Science from Yale University (2013) and a BA in History from Stanford University (2004).

Her affiliations include membership in the Centre for Policy and International Studies (CIPS) and the American Political Science Association. Bateson’s work bridges comparative politics and conflict studies, analyzing topics such as strategic discrimination, electoral consequences of violence, and the rise of illiberal leaders under democratic systems. She frequently engages in public scholarship through media outlets like The New York Times and CBC, and provides expert testimony on Guatemalan vigilante groups and electoral violence.
