Reetta Mietola serves as a University Researcher at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki, and supervises doctoral candidates in both the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Gender, Culture, and Society. She is a core affiliated researcher with the Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ), contributing to interdisciplinary research on social stratification and inclusion.
Her doctoral research (2014) at the Department of Behavioural Sciences established her expertise in ethnographic analysis of special education practices. This foundation evolved into her current multifaceted research program examining disability rights, inclusive democracy, and marginalized youth experiences through critical sociological and gender studies lenses.
Dr. Mietola's research portfolio demonstrates consistent focus on Disability Studies and Social Policy, increasingly intersecting with Gender Studies and Participatory Democracy research. Her work critically analyzes institutional barriers while foregrounding agency and subjectivity formation among persons with disabilities and minoritized groups, employing primarily ethnographic and qualitative life-history methodologies that prioritize marginalized voices.
Her 69 research outputs reveal evolving thematic concentration: early work centered on special education ethnography (2010-2017), while recent publications (2023-2025) emphasize inclusive democracy frameworks, political participation barriers, and Finnish girls' political aspirations—showcasing methodological continuity in qualitative analysis with expanding policy relevance.
She actively secures major research funding through high-impact projects including:
- OBAMA project (2024-2027): Overcoming Barriers to Democratic Participation with Minoritized Groups
- InterEarth RESET (2023-2028): Interdisciplinary environmental research collaboration
- Special class in life course project (2010-present): Longitudinal study of subjectivity in special education
- Vammaisten henkilöiden oikeuksien toteutuminen (2023): Disability rights implementation analysis
Her supervision extends beyond formal doctoral programs through active mentorship in the Helsinki Inequality Initiative ecosystem, where she cultivates collaborative research environments focused on translating critical social science into actionable inclusion strategies. Her board membership with Suomen Vammaistutkimuksen Seura ry (Finnish Disability Research Society) since 2011 further demonstrates sustained commitment to disability rights advocacy.
