Reetta Hänninen is a Researcher and Docent in History at the Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies, University of Helsinki. Her work focuses on Finnish media history, women's roles in journalism, and 20th-century socio-cultural dynamics. She actively participates in academic projects funded by institutions like the Academy of Finland and Helsingin Sanomain Säätiö.
Her research explores topics such as Maissi Erkko's activism, early Finnish newspapers like Aku Anku, and digital history presentation methods. Notably, she won the 2019 History Book of the Year award. Hänninen has led projects investigating historical communication, women's contributions to media, and Finland's cultural narratives. She contributes to academic networks through conference organizing and participation in initiatives like the HISCOM project studying historical communications in Finland.
Recent projects include Ainoa ja ensimmäinen, Tekla Hultin (2025-2026) and HISCOM: Historical Travel and Communications in Finland, c. 1650-1917 (2023-2027). Her doctoral thesis (2019) analyzed women's journalistic roles between the world wars, reflecting her deep engagement with Finland's media heritage.
