Reet Bender is a Professor of German Studies at the University of Tartu, serving as Head of the Department of German Studies and Programme Director for the German Studies BA programme. She holds a PhD in German Philology and has held academic positions since 2005. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on Baltic German language, history, and culture, with specializations in lexicography, cultural memory, and translation history. She has led major projects including the Baltic German Dictionary and the 'Baltic German Cultural Heritage' micro-degree programme.
Education includes a PhD from the University of Tartu (2009), M.A. in German Philology (2002), and studies at Marburg and Erlangen Universities with DAAD fellowships. Administrative roles include membership in the Learned Estonian Society and the Estonian Goethe Society.
Research interests span Baltic German student cultures, linguistic landscapes, and cultural heritage preservation. Awards include the 2023 Baltic German Society Cultural Award and the 2019 Learned Estonian Society Article Prize. She has collaborated on virtual heritage projects with Tartu City Museum and co-authored works on Baltic literary culture.
