Rebecca Wartell is an Assistant Professor and Chair in Jewish Studies at Earlham College. She holds a Ph.D. from Monash University, an M.T.S. from Harvard University, and a B.A. from Hampshire College. Her research focuses on Jewish refugees in the early modern Mediterranean, with a particular emphasis on religious minorities' experiences across colonial and cultural contexts. She actively contributes to inter-religious dialogue and supports Jewish life on campus through her role in the Office of Religious Life. Wartell leads the Portuguese Inquisition Records Data Project and has published works analyzing theological responses to migration, early modern Jewish communities, and historical figures like David Nieto.
Her academic memberships include the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies and the Mediterranean Seminar. She teaches courses exploring the intersection of religion, gender, and colonialism, and her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary cultural exchange initiatives.
