Rebecca Smith is a Principal Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Writing (CMCW). She specializes in creative writing, with research interests in families in fiction, flora/fauna in literature, Jane Austen's influence on contemporary writing, and writing for children/young adults. Her teaching roles include convening modules like Brief Encounters: Writing Short Stories and Writing the Novel at the undergraduate and MA levels. Smith has authored multiple novels, including Shadow Cat Summer (2021) and The Ash Museum (2021), as well as acclaimed nonfiction works such as Jane Austen's Guide to Modern Life's Dilemmas (2012). She has received significant awards, including the Royal Literary Fund's J.B. Priestley Award (2003) and Arts Council grants for her novels. Currently, she is working on a new novel for Legend Press (2023).
Her research bridges creative writing and literary analysis, with a focus on interdisciplinary storytelling. She has supervised numerous PhD students in English literature and creative writing, emphasizing narrative techniques and contemporary themes. Smith's work often explores historical and cultural intersections, as seen in her residency at Jane Austen’s House Museum (2009–2010), which influenced her Austen-related publications.
Awards and recognitions include the Kelpies Prize shortlisting for Shadow Cat Summer (2012) and sustained support from literary funding bodies. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes practical creative skills alongside critical analysis, reflected in modules like the Creative Skills Workshop and Writing for Children and Young People.
