Rebecca Simmons is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of North Dakota. Her research focuses on the evolution of complex behaviors and phenotypes in insects, particularly tiger moths, molecular evolution of genes controlling these traits, and the interaction between microbes and native pollinators in the Northern Great Plains.
- B.S., Biology, Bridgewater College
- M.S., Biology, Wake Forest University
- Ph.D., Entomology, University of Minnesota
Her work employs phylogenetic approaches to unravel evolutionary changes in characteristics and genetic loci, contributing to understanding biological diversity. Recent studies involve microbiome analysis of solitary pollinators and genomic tools for sex determination in moths.
Her publications span molecular phylogenetics, courtship behavior evolution, and pollinator community dynamics, with a focus on Lepidoptera and invasive species.
- Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching (Entomological Society of America, 2021)
- UND Foundation/Karleen Home Rosaaen Award for Academic Advising (2014)
- National Academy of Science Summer Teaching Institute Fellow (2011)
- UND Foundation Award for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence (2009)
She mentors students in entomological research and contributes to NSF grants addressing biological robustness. Her lab collaborates with genomic and entomological teams on biodiversity and educational initiatives.
