Rebecca Rogers serves as a University Professor at the University of Paris, specializing in the history of education with emphasis on 19th-century girls' schooling in France and colonial contexts. Affiliated with the Cerlis research center (Centre de recherche sociologiques sur le droit et les institutions pénales), she holds significant leadership roles including former President of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE, 2015-2018) and co-directorship of the journal Clio: Femmes, Genre, Histoire.
Her research examines women's roles in educational history through dual lenses: women's participation in colonial 'civilizing missions' and 19th-century family writing practices documented in education journals. Rogers employs interdisciplinary methodologies combining historical analysis, gender studies, and postcolonial theory to interrogate how educational institutions shaped gender norms and social hierarchies. Current projects extend her expertise into statistical representation of women in economic thought and transnational exhibition cultures.
Rogers' publication portfolio reveals consistent focus on gendered educational experiences across imperial contexts, with recent work analyzing colonial school systems and women's contributions to economic discourse. Her scholarship demonstrates methodological rigor through archival analysis of personal journals, statistical records, and institutional documents spanning France, Algeria, and global exhibition networks.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Mary Alice and Philip Boucher book prize (French Colonial Historical Society, 2014)
- Honorable mention for the David Pinkney Prize (French Historical Society)
- Best Book prize (History of Education Society, UK, 2007)
As academic advisor, Rogers directs the Master Recherche en éducation et formation program at the University of Paris while mentoring doctoral candidates through networks like Mage (Marché du travail et genre). Her editorial leadership spans multiple international journals including Histoire de l’éducation and Paedagogica Historica, with active participation in research councils for CollEx-Persée and the Bibliothèque d’Histoire de l’éducation.
Rogers leads collaborative research teams at Cerlis and coordinates the Université de Paris' Cité du Genre initiative. Her international collaborations include co-authoring projects with scholars across Europe, North America, and Australia, notably through the International Standing Conference for the History of Education where she served as President for three years.
