Dr Rebecca Riedel is a Lecturer in Law at the School of Law and Politics, Cardiff University, a position she has held since January 2023. She previously served as a Postgraduate Tutor (2019–2022) and Tutor (2022–2023) at the same institution. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the Centre for Law and Religion, and actively participates in postgraduate supervision.
Her educational background includes an LLB (2018) and a PhD (2024) from Cardiff University. Her doctoral thesis, 'A Critical Legal Study of the Prevent Duty: The Religious Dimension,' reflects her deep engagement with law and religion.
Dr Riedel’s research focuses on the intersection of law and religion, with particular attention to religious radicalisation, children's rights, legal history, and counter-terrorism. She is broadly interested in law and the humanities, contributing to socio-legal and ecclesiastical law discourse. Her teaching responsibilities include co-leading the Legal History module and instructing on LLB modules such as Land Law, Equity and Trusts, Public Law, and Family Law, as well as the LLM Canon Law module.
Her recent publications and conference presentations center on religious freedom, non-belief in the UK, and the legal implications of the Prevent Duty. These works span disciplines including legal history, human rights, and religious studies, demonstrating a consistent thematic focus on religion-state dynamics in British law.
Dr Riedel is an active member of the academic community, presenting at conferences such as the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) and the Law and Religion Scholars Network (LARSN). She serves as the NSS Lead and Student Voice Co-ordinator for Law at Cardiff, reflecting her commitment to student engagement and academic excellence.
She is available to supervise PhD students in law and religion, religious freedom, religion and counter-terrorism, and religion and children's rights. She has no listed scientific awards to date.
Dr Riedel is affiliated with key research networks including the Ecclesiastical Law Society and the Socio-Legal Studies Association, and contributes to interdisciplinary dialogue through her involvement in the Centre for Law and Religion.
