Rebecca R. French is a Professor at the University at Buffalo School of Law, specializing in the Anthropology of Law, Buddhism and Law, and Comparative Law. Her work bridges legal theory, religious studies, and Buddhist legal systems. She holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan, a J.D. from the University of Washington, an LL.M., and a Ph.D. in Legal Anthropology from Yale University.
Her research includes four years of fieldwork in Tibet and India, leading to her seminal work *The Golden Yoke* (2002). She co-edited *Buddhism and Law: An Introduction* (2014), and founded the journal *Buddhism, Law & Society* in 2015. She organized international conferences on Buddhism and law, including one in Buffalo (2019).
French has received grants from NSF, SSRC, and Fulbright, among others. She served as Director of the Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy (2008–2010) and previously held roles at the University of Colorado (1992–2001). She engages with Tibetan and Indonesian communities on cultural and legal issues, and lectures globally for organizations like Amnesty International and Tibet House.
