Rebecca Owen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Utah, where she has held a position since 2022. She previously served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the same department from 2021 to 2022 and is a Core Affiliate Faculty member in the Health, Society & Policy program since 2021. Her work bridges sociology and criminology with public health.

Her research focuses on juvenile justice systems, restorative justice programs, and the intersection of social disadvantage with health and legal outcomes. She explores racial disparities in judicial diversion programs and how illness impacts adolescent behavior through life history theory. Her recent publications analyze Salt Lake Peer Court's effectiveness in reducing recidivism and addressing disproportionate minority contact.
Her scholarly work spans 2015 to 2024, examining policies affecting adolescent behavior (nutrition policy), health impacts on sexual risk-taking, and restorative justice interventions. Her studies often employ longitudinal data analysis and mixed-effects modeling.
