Rebecca Michaels serves as an Associate Professor of Photography at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University. With a teaching career spanning over four decades since 1981, she mentors both undergraduate and graduate students while maintaining an active studio practice. Her academic affiliations include previous teaching positions at the Maryland Institute of Art and the School of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
Michaels' research interests center on the intersection of photography, book art, and graphic design, informed by her background as a certified Master offset printer and visual artist. Her work demonstrates a strong architectural sensibility with recent projects focusing on book-based photographic works, both handmade and mass-produced. She explores how critical thinking shapes lifelong learning patterns in visual arts education.
Her publications reveal a consistent exploration of visual narrative through book formats, with notable works including the Square Book Series (2014-2019) and earlier conceptual projects like The Book of Hair (1984) and The Courtship Patterns of Chairs (1979). These works demonstrate her evolution from traditional photographic book formats to more conceptual approaches while maintaining technical excellence.
Michaels maintains significant professional engagement as the Society for Photographic Education Mid-Atlantic Chapter Chair and Board Member for the Photo Review Philadelphia. Her work is represented in prestigious collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art Fine Art Book Collection, The Museum of Modern Art Artists Book Collection, and The New York City Library Rare Book Collection.
Her academic journey includes an MFA from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture (1983) and a BFA from The Art Institute of Chicago (1977), establishing a foundation that bridges formal education with extensive professional practice in both artistic creation and pedagogy.
