Rebecca Maloy

Rebecca Maloy serves as the J.W. Van Gorkom Professor of Music and Director of the Sacred Music Program at the University of Notre Dame's Department of Music within the College of Arts and Letters. Previously, she taught at the University of Colorado Boulder from 2002 to 2023.

Maloy specializes in medieval liturgy and chant, particularly the Old Hispanic liturgy of the Iberian Peninsula (7th-11th centuries). Her research employs interdisciplinary methods, including musical analysis, notational paleography, and the study of text-music relationships, to explore the integration of chant with liturgical elements, its connections to biblical exegesis, and its relationship to Western chant traditions. Her notable works include Songs of Sacrifice: Chant, Identity, and Christian Formation in Early Medieval Iberia, which positions the chant within Visigothic Iberia's cultural renewal, and co-authored volumes such as Understanding the Old Hispanic Office.
