Rebecca Judith Nelson is a Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science (Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology Section) and the Department of Global Development at Cornell University. Her work focuses on advancing the circular bionutrient economy, with research spanning sanitation innovation, biochar applications, and sustainable agriculture. She holds leadership roles in initiatives like The Soil Factory and has received significant grants totaling over $16 million since 2011.
Education: Doctorate from the University of Washington (1988), Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College (1982). Prior to Cornell, she worked at the International Potato Center (1996-2001) and the International Rice Research Institute (1988-1996).
Research interests include peecycling implementation, nutrient recovery from organic waste, and reducing mycotoxin contamination in food systems. She teaches courses on circular economy frameworks and collaborates globally, including in East Africa and India.
Awards include the MacArthur Fellowship (1998-2003), International IPM Award (2018), and recognition for international service (2015). Her lab’s work has been featured in outlets like the New York Times and Cornell Chronicle.
