Rebecca J. Barthelmie is Professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University and a Croll Faculty Fellow. Her research focuses on wind energy resources, turbine wakes, and boundary-layer interactions in onshore and offshore wind farms.
Barthelmie investigates wind farm optimization through measurements and modeling, employing remote sensing technologies like lidar to characterize complex atmospheric flows. Her work examines terrain effects on wind resources, wake behavior, and turbulence characteristics essential for efficient turbine siting.
Research contributions include developing wind resource assessment methodologies, analyzing escarpment flow patterns, and quantifying wind energy's potential for climate change mitigation. Current NSF and DOE-funded projects study low-level jets and wake interactions in large wind farms.
Honors:
- U.S. Fulbright Scholar (2017)
- Affiliate Professor, Danish Technical University (2016)
- NSF Presidential Award nomination (2016)
