Professor Rebecca Grotjahn is a distinguished musicologist at Paderborn University's Musicology Seminar Detmold/Paderborn within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Appointed to her professorship in April 2006 with a focus on gender research and women's music, she has served as managing director of the Musicology Seminar from 2006-2017 and again from 2022-2023, with a period as deputy director from 2017-2020.
Her research spans the intersection of music history and sociology, with particular expertise in singing history, gender studies in music, material culture of music, and music during the Nazi era. Grotjahn has led significant research projects including 'Technologien des Singens' (DFG-funded), 'Das Geschlecht musikalischer Dinge,' and 'Edition phonographischer Musik,' for which she received the University of Paderborn Research Prize in 2020.
Her recent publications demonstrate continued scholarly productivity, with multiple 2024 articles examining music under National Socialism, the evolution of vocal techniques, and women composers. Grotjahn's work consistently bridges historical musicology with contemporary gender theory and cultural studies.
