Dr. Rebecca Gilmour is an Assistant Professor in Sociology and Anthropology at Mount Royal University. She holds a PhD in Biological Anthropology from McMaster University, an MSc in Palaeopathology from Durham University (UK), and a BA in Archaeology from Simon Fraser University.
Her research applies bone biomechanics to study injury recovery and human adaptation, focusing on Roman-era populations. Key projects analyze limb trauma consequences using imaging techniques at sites across Europe, examining mobility impairment and activity resumption. She develops methods for quantifying cortical bone in fragmentary remains.
Publications demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches combining bioarchaeology, disability studies, and trauma biomechanics. Her work reveals patterns in Roman frontier life, including gendered activity differences and epidemic survivorship.
Research employs diverse methodologies: geometric morphometrics, radiogrammetry, cross-sectional geometry, and 3D imaging to investigate skeletal responses to pathologies like fractures and infections.
