Rebecca Garnham is a Lecturer in Cancer Biology at the University of Sunderland's School of Medicine, where she teaches in the MBChB Medicine program. She maintains guest researcher status at Newcastle University and actively collaborates with their research teams on prostate cancer projects.
Dr. Garnham completed her Biomedical Science degree with distinction at the University of Sunderland in 2018, which sparked her interest in cancer research. She then pursued an MRes in Cancer at Newcastle University, followed by a PhD in prostate cancer glycoimmunology, investigating sialoglycan-Siglec interactions within the prostate cancer tumor immune microenvironment. After her PhD, she worked as a Post Doctoral Research Associate before joining the University of Sunderland as a Lecturer.
Her research focuses on the critical interplay between immunoinhibitory receptors (Siglecs) on immune cells and sialic acid hyper-expressed on tumor cells, with the goal of targeting this interaction to improve cancer treatment responses. Her work spans cancer immunology, prostate cancer biology, immunotherapies, and glycobiology, with particular expertise in how glycosylation patterns affect tumor immunity and progression.
Dr. Garnham's publication record demonstrates consistent progress in understanding glycosylation enzymes and their role in prostate cancer. Her recent work has revealed how sialic acid blockade inhibits metastasis to bone, how ST3Gal1 synthesis of Siglec ligands mediates anti-tumor immunity, and how various glycosylation enzymes like ST6GAL1 and GALNT7 promote cancer progression through aberrant sialylation and O-glycosylation.

Dr. Garnham continues to work closely with Newcastle University on research projects and actively seeks self-funded PhD and summer project students interested in investigating sialic acid-Siglec interactions within the prostate cancer tumor immune microenvironment or developing strategies to target these interactions to improve response rates to cancer immunotherapy.
