Rebecca D. Silverman is the Judy Koch Professor of Education at Stanford University's Graduate School of Education (GSE). She holds a Professor academic rank and has been at Stanford since 2018, previously serving as Associate Professor at the University of Maryland (2018–2018). Her research focuses on early language and literacy development, particularly leveraging educational technology and multimedia tools. She leads the Language to Literacy Research Lab and collaborates with Bay Area schools through research-practice partnerships. Silverman teaches courses bridging research and practice, mentoring doctoral students and leading professional development for educators.
Education: Ed.D. (Harvard, 2005), Ed.M. (Harvard, 2001), B.A. (George Washington University, 1998).
Research emphasizes language-based instruction for multilingual learners, computer-adaptive assessments, and digital literacy programs. Recent projects include CLAVES curriculum efficacy studies and ROAR's adaptive assessments. Her work addresses literacy challenges in diverse classrooms, including African American English speakers.
Awards include the Friends of Haas Award (2024) and GSE Advising Award (2021). Service roles: Editor-in-Chief of the Elementary School Journal, Board Member of the International Literacy Association, and advisor to Sesame Workshop/PBS. She also advises Stanford's Haas Center for Public Service and Ravenswood Reads.
