Rebecca Clode serves as the Ethel Tory Lecturer in Drama and Lecturer in English at the School of Literature, Languages & Linguistics, Australian National University (ANU), where she has been a faculty member since 2007. Her academic career bridges rigorous scholarship with practical theatre experience, focusing on the intersection of literary analysis and performance.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD from ANU
- MA in Text and Performance Studies from King's College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
- BA (First Class Honors) and BScience from ANU
Clode's research centers on Australian drama (historical and practical dimensions), contemporary European and American drama, and metatheatrical techniques. She investigates how playwrights like Hewett, Nowra, Wertenbaker, and Murray employ self-referential theatrical devices, while also examining pandemic impacts on women playwrights and refugee crisis interventions through performance. Her work consistently connects theoretical frameworks with real-world theatre practice.
Analysis of her publications reveals strong thematic continuity in Australian theatrical identity, with recent works exploring COVID-19's disruption of women's creative voices and metatheatrical responses to political crises. Her scholarship demonstrates methodological diversity, combining archival research, quantitative analysis, and practice-based dramaturgy.
Clode has secured research funding including a 2023 Freilich Project grant ($4970) for 'Performing Resistance: A Study of Literary and Theatrical interventions into Australia’s Refugee Crisis'. She actively contributes to Canberra's theatre ecosystem as dramaturg for new works at The Street Theatre, including 'This Rough Magic' (2023), 'People Inside Me' (2021), and 'People Might Hear You' (2019), demonstrating sustained community engagement through creative practice.
