Associate Professor Linda Hassall is a faculty member at the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science at Griffith University, where she serves as Deputy Program Director for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor Arts Dual Degrees, Field of Study Coordinator for the Drama Major, and Program Director for the Bachelor of Creative Industries. With 30 years of professional theatre experience as a director, playwright, and dramaturge, she focuses on sustainable theatre practices and eco-critical performance research.
- Research Excellence Award (2024, Arts Education & Law Group)
- Griffith University Sustainability Award (2015)
Her research explores the intersection of climate change, Australian Gothic performance narratives, and sustainable theatre practices. As a founding member of the Performing Ecologies Research Lab (P+ERL), she co-developed the Culture for Climate report (2023) and secured an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant (2024) to expand sustainability research across the performing arts sector. She also led a consultancy with NIDA to develop eco-curricula for all their programs (2023).
Supervising HDR students in areas such as eco-justice performance and sustainable landscape dramaturgies, her work extends to community projects like the Story Festival (2023), which uses theatre to support refugee and migrant youth. Her 2021 book Theatres of Dust: Climate Gothic Analysis in Contemporary Australian Drama redefines the Gothic trope as a framework for ecological analysis.
