Rebecca C. Bartel

Rebecca C. Bartel is an Associate Professor in the Department for the Study of Religion at San Diego State University, where she also directs the Jewish Studies program. Her research bridges religion, political economy, and justice, with a focus on Colombia and Latin America.

Her research examines the intersections of religion and capitalism, including speculative faith in financial systems, protective religious practices in violent contexts, and decolonial approaches to justice. Current projects extend her work to migrant experiences and intercultural reconciliation.

Recent publications highlight her contributions to understanding Christian microfinance, transitional justice in Colombia, and the political responsibilities of academic institutions. She has received grants from multiple prestigious organizations, including the Social Science Research Council and the American Academy of Religion.
