Rebecca Bennette is a Professor of History at Middlebury College, specializing in modern German history. She holds a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and an A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her research focuses on nationalism, religion, eugenics, and the history of medicine and psychiatry. She has authored two books: *Fighting for the Soul of Germany* (2012) and *Diagnosing Dissent* (2020), with a third in progress on Nazi eugenics and WWI veterans. Bennette’s work has been supported by major grants and fellowships, including from the NEH and Mellon Foundation, and she recently appeared in a National Geographic documentary on Nazi Germany.
Her courses span modern European history, genocide studies, and the history of medicine. Notable courses include *Genocides Throughout History* and *The Holocaust*, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and public engagement through the Public Humanities Labs Initiative. Bennette actively mentors students in research through thesis seminars and senior independent studies.
Awards and grants highlight her scholarly contributions, including recognition from DAAD, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, and others. Her current project examines the intersection of veterans and eugenic policies in the Third Reich, reflecting her commitment to understanding historical injustices and their contemporary legacies.
