Rebecca Barlag is a Professor of Instruction and Director of the B.S. Forensic Chemistry program in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ohio University’s College of Arts and Sciences. She is based at the Athens Campus and plays a key role in shaping the undergraduate chemistry curriculum, particularly in analytical and forensic chemistry education.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, University of Cincinnati
- B.S. in Forensic Chemistry, Ohio University
Dr. Barlag’s research is centered on chemical education, with a strong emphasis on improving laboratory instruction in general and analytical chemistry. Her work focuses on developing innovative, safe, and cost-effective experiments that enhance student understanding of core chemical principles. She has published extensively in pedagogical journals such as the Journal of Chemical Education and The Chemical Educator, covering topics like titration methods, calorimetry, electrochemistry, and green chemistry practices.
Her recent publications reflect a consistent theme of laboratory innovation, with studies on conductivity measurements, acid-base equilibria, thermodynamics, and immunoassay techniques. These works are predominantly designed for undergraduate teaching laboratories, emphasizing hands-on learning, data interpretation, and conceptual integration across chemistry subdisciplines.
Although no formal scientific awards are listed, her sustained scholarly output underscores her dedication to excellence in chemistry education.
Dr. Barlag teaches courses including CHEM 1520 (Fundamentals of Chemistry II), CHEM 2410/2410L (Analytical Chemistry I), CHEM 4310/4310L (Analytical Chemistry II), and CHEM 5860 (Advanced Analytical Chemistry). She mentors curriculum development and laboratory upgrades but there is no public information about graduate students or research grants. She is actively involved in laboratory modernization and sustainability initiatives, contributing to efficient and pedagogically sound instructional practices.
