Rebecca A. Koopmann is the Frank and Marie Louise Bailey Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Union College. She specializes in observational studies of galaxy evolution, particularly focusing on environmental effects in galaxy groups and clusters. Her work utilizes HI (neutral hydrogen) observations from the Arecibo Observatory and leads the NSF-funded Undergraduate ALFALFA Team, fostering undergraduate research collaboration across 24 institutions. She is affiliated with the American Astronomical Society and has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications.
Education: B.S. in Physics from Union College, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. in Astronomy from Yale University. Her research integrates large-scale surveys like ALFALFA with student-driven projects, emphasizing the impact of filaments and galaxy clusters on star formation and gas content. Awards include a NASA/NY Space Grant and an NSF Special Projects grant for ALFALFA-related initiatives.
- Key Projects: ALFALFA HI survey, Undergraduate ALFALFA Team (2008-2022), Virgo Filaments study, and APPSS survey.
- Teaching: Courses include Astronomy, Galaxies, Astrobiology, and Introductory Physics.
- Labs/Teams: Member of the ALFALFA Collaboration and co-leader of the Green Bank Telescope undergraduate workshop series.
