Ratul Mahajan is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington's Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. He serves as Co-director of the UW Center for the Future of Cloud Infrastructure (FOCI) and holds the position of Amazon Scholar at AWS. Previously, he was the Co-founder and CEO of Intentionet, a company pioneering intent-based networking and network verification, and a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research.
His research spans multiple areas within computer systems with a networking focus, including network verification, connected homes, network programming, optical networks, Internet routing and measurements, and mobile systems. His work has resulted in over fifty publications in top venues such as SIGCOMM, SOSP, MobiCom, CHI, and PLDI, with many technologies developed in his research being implemented in real-world systems at Microsoft and other companies.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward practical network verification and application networking, with increasing focus on cloud infrastructure, microservices architectures, and formal methods for network configuration analysis. His work bridges theoretical formal methods with practical networking challenges, resulting in tools that have been adopted in industry settings.
His scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards:
- ACM Distinguished Scientist
- ACM SIGCOMM Rising Star
- Microsoft Research Graduate Fellow
- ACM SIGCOMM Test-of-Time Award
- IEEE William R. Bennett Prize
- Two ACM SIGCOMM Best Paper Awards
- HVC Best Paper Award
- Best Dataset Award
Professionally active in the networking community, Mahajan has served as PC chair for SIGCOMM 2020, NSDI 2014, IMC 2012, MobiArch 2011, and HotNets 2009, among others. He has been a PC member for numerous top conferences including SIGCOMM, NSDI, OSDI, and IMC across multiple years. He served on the IMC Steering committee from 2014-2018 and was Associate editor for IEEE/ACM ToN from 2012-2014.
He leads research at the Computer Systems Lab and co-directs the UW Center for the Future of Cloud Infrastructure (FOCI), where his team develops practical solutions for network verification, cloud infrastructure, and next-generation networking technologies. His work at Intentionet and Microsoft Research demonstrates strong industry impact, with several technologies transitioning from research to real-world deployment.
