Rasmus Kleis Nielsen is an Assistant Professor of Communications at Roskilde University (Denmark) and a Research Fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on political communication, digital technologies in political campaigns, and the impact of new media on traditional news organizations.
He holds a PhD in Communications from Columbia University, where he also taught at the School of International and Public Affairs. His educational background includes a BA and MA in Political Science from the University of Copenhagen and an MA in Political Theory from the University of Essex.
Key research interests include the role of social media platforms in political discourse, trust in journalism, and misinformation dynamics. He leads the DemTech project, investigating algorithms and computational propaganda in public life. His work often spans cross-national comparisons, examining media trends in over 40 countries.
Recent publications explore AI’s impact on news production, the decline in news participation, and the interplay between electoral misinformation and public trust. He has advised policymakers on digital governance and regularly contributes to debates on media ethics and democracy.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Reuters Institute and DemTech initiative. Future work priorities include deepening analyses of platform regulation, AI’s societal implications, and equitable access to quality information.
