Dr Rasiqh Wadud is a Principal Investigator at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, where he leads research on ion channel physiology in red blood cells. He is supported by a Wellcome Trust Fellowship and collaborates with biotechnology companies to bridge basic discovery with translational potential.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) from North South University (NSU) in Bangladesh
- MSc in Pharmacology from the University of Oxford
- PhD from the University of Cambridge focusing on red blood cell biology
Dr Wadud's research centers on the physiology and pharmacology of mechanosensitive ion channels, with particular focus on their function in red blood cells and implications for vascular biology. His laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach combining functional studies in primary human erythrocytes with electrophysiology and pharmacological profiling. He investigates how these channels contribute to the pathophysiology of inherited blood disorders such as Sickle Cell Disease and Hereditary Xerocytosis, as well as how alterations in membrane ion transport and phospholipid distribution affect red cell survival, circulation, and interaction with the vascular system.
His primary scientific recognition is the Wellcome Trust Fellowship, which supports his ongoing research program.
Dr Wadud previously worked as a scientist at the Sanger Institute and Charles River Laboratories, gaining valuable experience in assay development, high-throughput screening, and drug discovery that informs his current translational research approach.
