Rashad Shabazz

Rashad Shabazz is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University, with affiliate appointments in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning and the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict. His interdisciplinary scholarship examines how geography shapes racial, gender, and cultural formations.

Research Focus: Shabazz's work investigates the spatial dimensions of racialization processes, particularly through carceral systems and urban planning. His seminal book 'Spatializing Blackness' analyzes how carceral power within Black Chicago communities influenced urban development, housing policies, policing practices, and health outcomes. Current research extends this spatial analysis to examine architecture, gang formation, masculinity, and incarceration disparities.
