Rashaan DeShay, J.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Texas Christian University (TCU), affiliated with the AddRan College of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on decision-making processes in criminal activity, wrongful convictions, corrections, and qualitative methodology.
DeShay holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Criminology from The University of Texas at Dallas (2014 and 2012), a J.D. and Bachelor of Civil Law from Louisiana State University (2007), and a B.S. in Criminal Justice (Cum Laude) from the University of North Texas (2004).
His research explores topics such as exoneree reintegration, police misconduct disparities, risk management in criminal activities, and gender dynamics in prison relationships. Recent work examines the intersection of race, gender, and police violence, as well as comparative analyses of private vs. public prison misconduct in Texas.
DeShay’s publications emphasize understanding offender motivations through qualitative methods, including studies on intermittent criminal behavior, the impact of relationships on criminal careers, and systemic issues in the criminal justice system.
