Raquel Pires Alves is a Researcher at the Electronic Systems group within the Department of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). She actively contributes to the field of healthcare technology, particularly in contactless respiration monitoring using thermal cameras, under the supervision of Dr. Sander Stuijk, Dr. Mark van Gastel, and Dr. Sveta Zinger. Her work is part of the UMOSA project (Unobtrusive Monitoring of Sleep Apnea) in collaboration with Philips Research and Kempenhaeghe Sleep Medicine Center.
Her academic journey includes an integrated B.Sc + M.Sc in Bioengineering (Biomedical Engineering) from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto, Portugal (2020). Her research spans the intersection of thermal imaging, signal processing, and sleep medicine, with publications in journals and conferences like Sensors and IEEE ICCE-Berlin. While her role as a doctoral candidate aligns with 'Researcher' in this context, she is not a faculty member with a teaching or professorial title.
- Research Focus: Healthcare technology, cameras-based solutions, and signal processing.
- Grants: Funded by NWO (Grant No. 17117).
- Labs & Collaborations: Affiliated with the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (e/MTIC), Biomedical Diagnostics Lab, and Efficient Stream Processing Lab.
- Key Contributions: Demonstrating the feasibility of single-camera thermal imaging for respiration monitoring, optimizing camera placement, and advancing non-invasive sleep apnea diagnostics.
