Randy McCarthy is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He currently serves as the LAS Associate Dean for Technology and Online Learning. His research focuses on Algebraic K-theory, algebraic topology, spectra, and calculus of functors. McCarthy holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University (1990).
He has received notable awards including the Sloan Research Fellowship (1996-1998), Sloan Dissertation Fellowship (1989-1990), and the Beckman Associate title at UIUC's Center for Advanced Study (1998-1999). His publications span advanced topics in algebraic topology, K-theory, and functor calculus, with significant contributions to journals like Transactions of the American Mathematical Society and Geometry and Topology.
McCarthy’s work emphasizes theoretical frameworks such as cross effects, Taylor towers, and spectral sequences. His research bridges abstract algebra with geometric and topological structures, contributing to foundational areas in modern mathematics.
