Randi Hjalmarsson is a Professor of Economics at the University of Gothenburg's Department of Economics, affiliated with the School of Business, Economics and Law. She holds dual citizenship (USA/Sweden) and has extensive academic experience, including roles at Queen Mary University of London and the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on the Economics of Crime, Labor Economics, and Law and Economics, emphasizing determinants of crime, jury decision-making dynamics, and racial biases in the criminal justice system.
Education: PhD in Economics from Yale University (2005), with notable advisors including Joseph Altonji. Previous positions include Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland and roles at Queen Mary University of London (2010–2013). Current roles include PhD Program Director at Gothenburg and membership in the Scientific Board of Swedish Prison and Probation Services.
Research highlights include studies on military conscription's impact on crime, jury composition effects, and the historical analysis of police forces on crime reduction.
