Randall Schweller is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Program for the Study of Realist Foreign Policy at Ohio State University (OSU), where he has been since 1994. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Security Studies and holds the Social and Behavioral Sciences Joan N. Huber Faculty Fellowship. His expertise lies in international relations theory, particularly as a founder of neoclassical realism and a grand theorist. Schweller earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University and has held a John M. Olin Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Harvard University.
His research focuses on international order, US-China relations, power transition, and the interplay between domestic politics and foreign policy. Notable works include Maxwell’s Demon and the Golden Apple (2014), Unanswered Threats (2006), and Deadly Imbalances (1998). He frequently publishes in top journals like World Politics, International Security, and American Political Science Review.
Schweller’s awards include recognition as one of the top 25 scholars in international relations by a global faculty survey. His grants and fellowships reflect sustained engagement with foundational and applied research in security studies and international relations. He leads the Program for the Study of Realist Foreign Policy, shaping debates on realism’s contemporary relevance.
