Randall Lesaffer is a Full Professor of Legal History at Tilburg University (since 1999) and part-time professor of International and European Legal History at KU Leuven. He also holds a visiting professorship at Católica Global School of Law, Lisbon. His research focuses on the history of international law since 1500, with particular emphasis on early modern European legal frameworks, peace treaties, and the evolution of state sovereignty. He is the editor-in-chief of several prestigious legal series and journals, including the Journal of the History of International Law and the Cambridge History of International Law (13-volume series).
Education: J.D. and Ph.D. in Law from Ghent University and KU Leuven. Postdoctoral research fellowship at FWO (Flemish Government, 1998–1999).
Research Interests: Legal history, international law historiography, diplomatic and colonial history, with a focus on peace treaties, state sovereignty, and the law of nations in early modern Europe. Key areas include the Treaty of Versailles, Renaissance peacemaking, and the historiography of international law in non-European contexts.
Awards: Member of Academia Europaea (2024), Sarton Medal for Intellectual History (2013).
Grants & Supervision: Supervised 16 PhD students, including Ruud van den Berg and Raymond Kubben. Active in collaborative projects like Historical Foundations of International Law in Europe.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Global Law & Governance research group at Tilburg Law School, focusing on transnational legal frameworks and global governance challenges.
