Randall Helmstutler is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Mary Washington, where he has served since 2005. He was recently selected as Director of Undergraduate Programs within the newly formed College of Business, Computer Science, Economics, and Mathematics.
- B.S., Radford University
- M.S., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Ph.D., University of Virginia
Helmstutler's research spans pure and applied mathematics, with a focus on algebraic structures and their categorical representations. His work explores intersections of category theory, homotopy theory, and group theory, particularly through Quillen equivalence in stable model categories and generalized dihedral group constructions.
His recent publications and conference presentations, including contributions to the Joint Mathematics Meetings, highlight his engagement with abstract algebra and computational methods. Notably, his 2023 article on Quillen equivalent functors and JMM presentation on generalized dihedral groups reflect his ongoing contributions to algebraic frameworks.
As Chair and Director of Undergraduate Programs, Helmstutler plays a pivotal role in academic leadership and curriculum development. His career demonstrates a blend of research innovation and institutional service within Mary Washington's mathematical community.
