- M.A., M.F.A. in Painting, University of Iowa
- B.F.A. in Painting, Washburn University
Exon’s research explores representational painting, emphasizing landscape and the figure within it. His work interrogates how memory and dreams shape our understanding of the past, often creating fictions from collected sources or personal experience. Recent projects include Maritime (2022), a solo exhibition examining isolation during the pandemic through boat imagery.
His 15 most recent artworks (2011–2022) span landscapes, marine still lifes, and symbolic rudder portraits. Themes of timelessness, surrealism, and emotional resonance in everyday scenes dominate his practice.
- Henry Luce Scholarship (1985)
- Thomas Benedict Clark Prize (2004)
Exon’s teaching includes foundational and advanced painting courses. He maintains an active studio practice, with exhibitions in the U.S. and U.K., and resides in Wallingford, PA.
