Ran Tao is an Associate Professor in the School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida (USF), specializing in Geographic Information Science (GIScience). His research focuses on spatial flow data analysis, spatial statistics, geovisualization, and geocomputation, with applications in urban shrinkage, mobility analysis, and disaster management. He holds a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a BS from Wuhan University.
Dr. Tao has developed innovative methods for analyzing spatial flow data, including BiFlowLISA and flowHDBSCAN. His interdisciplinary projects include studying shrinking cities in Northeast China, modeling territorial control in Sub-Saharan Africa, and optimizing vaccination site locations during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been awarded grants such as the AWS in Education Grant and the Travel Award of XSEDE.

His research is funded by NSF, USDOT, and USF, addressing topics such as electric vehicle adoption disparities, spatial accessibility to healthcare, and AI-driven mapping techniques with tools like ChatGPT and GPT-4V.
