Ran Feng is an Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut, specializing in paleoclimatology and climate dynamics. His research focuses on cloud and precipitation processes in warm climate states, interactions between the hydrological cycle and mountain uplift, and collaborations with geochemists, paleontologists, and geophysicists to explore terrestrial climate evolution. He holds a Ph.D. in Earth & Environmental Sciences from the University of Michigan, an M.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from the Chinese National Academy of Sciences, and a B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from Nanjing University.
His current interests include the Mid-Pliocene Warm Period, Pacific climate variability, and the role of CO2 forcing in past and future climate states. He has developed novel geochemical approaches to reconstruct ancient hydroclimates and employs high-resolution climate models to investigate extreme weather systems like tropical cyclones and atmospheric rivers. Feng actively participates in international initiatives such as PlioMIP and DYAMOND, contributing to the understanding of Earth’s climate sensitivity and feedback mechanisms.
He teaches courses on applied data analysis in Earth sciences (ERTH 4150/5150) and atmospheric/ocean modeling (ERTH 4810/5810). His work bridges geology, atmospheric science, and computational modeling, aiming to inform future climate projections through paleoclimate insights.
