Dr. Michiel Baatsen is an Assistant Professor in Dynamics Meteorology and Earth System Modelling at Utrecht University's Faculty of Science. He holds a PhD from Utrecht University (2019) and specializes in paleoclimate modeling focusing on the Eocene and Pliocene eras. His research employs the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to investigate atmospheric dynamics, climate model simulations, and Solar Radiation Management (SRM) strategies.
Education:
- Bachelor of Physics, University of Antwerp
- Master of Meteorology, Physical Oceanography and Climate, Utrecht University
- PhD in Modelling of Past Warm Climates, Utrecht University
Research Interests: Dr. Baatsen's work bridges theoretical climate understanding and observational data. Key areas include:
- Palaeoclimatology of extreme greenhouse periods (Eocene/Pliocene)
- Climate model simulations using CESM
- Atmospheric dynamics and heat transport mechanisms
- Solar Radiation Management (SRM) impacts on climate systems
- Model intercomparison projects (e.g., PlioMIP, DeepMIP)
Collaborations: Active in international networks including KNMI, NIOZ, and WUR. Leads the Earth System Modelling group at IMAU, coordinating the 'ESM for lunch' initiative.
