Dr. Ran An is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston and joint faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the UH Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. He holds a research background in biotechnology industry and postdoctoral training at Case Western Reserve University.
His research focuses on developing microfluidic biosensors for point-of-care diagnostics, organ-on-chip models for disease modeling, and understanding stem cell-driven pathologies in gastrointestinal and pulmonary diseases. His work spans translational research, including clinical translation and commercialization of biomedical technologies.
Dr. An has authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and holds 10 patents, several of which are commercially licensed. His grants include NIH funding (NHLBI, NIDDK), Air Force Research Laboratory, and CAPCaT awards. His research highlights include targeting resistant cancer stem cells, identifying disease-initiating stem cell variants, and developing novel diagnostic platforms.
- Scientific Awards:
- NIH K25 Career Development Award
- NIH Technology Accelerator Challenge Award
- NIH T32 Postdoc Fellowship
His advising and grants focus on bridging stem cell biology with clinical applications. He collaborates on lung regeneration strategies and precision medicine approaches targeting stem cell-driven diseases. His lab actively investigates stem cell heterogeneity in conditions like cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s disease, and esophageal adenocarcinoma.
