Dr. Ramona D Fotiade is a Reader in French at the University of Glasgow's College of Arts, specializing in Modern and Contemporary French Thought, Twentieth-Century French Avant-Garde Movements, French Photography and Cinema, and Japanese Philosophy and Visual Studies. As a prominent scholar in existential philosophy, she serves as Co-Director of the Arts Lab theme Islands in the Global Age, which explores the geopoetic dimension of landscapes and seeks creative solutions to global challenges through transdisciplinary partnerships with archipelagic communities.
Dr. Fotiade's research spans three interrelated areas in Twentieth-Century Studies: avant-garde literary movements, philosophy, and visual culture. Her work demonstrates a particular focus on existentialist thought, with significant contributions to Shestov studies. She has established strategic academic partnerships with Waseda University and Kyushu University in Japan, and has organized numerous events on Franco-Japanese cultural exchanges through the Alliance française de Glasgow. In 2019, she was awarded a JSPS Visiting Fellowship at Waseda University in Tokyo.
As Principal Investigator of the RSE-funded Network in Existential Philosophy and Literature, Dr. Fotiade has organized impactful knowledge exchange events on geopoetics and the work of Glasgow-born philosopher Kenneth White. Her scholarly output reveals a consistent engagement with existential philosophy, particularly the works of Léon Chestov, Derrida, Deleuze, and Surrealist movements.
