Professor Ramon Z. Shaban is the Clinical Chair of Communicable Disease Control and Infection Prevention jointly appointed at the University of Sydney within the Sydney Nursing School and Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute, and Western Sydney Local Health District. He serves as Chief Infection Control Practitioner and District Director of Communicable Disease Control for Western Sydney Local Health District, providing strategic leadership in infection prevention and disease control services. Professor Shaban is also an Associate Director of the New South Wales Biocontainment Centre, Australia's first purpose-built facility for managing high-consequence infectious diseases.
His research interests span communicable diseases, health protection, high-consequence infectious diseases, outbreak management, infection prevention and control, emergency care, and clinical decision-making. Professor Shaban has led significant responses to public health emergencies, including identifying and managing the first cases of COVID-19 in NSW at Westmead Hospital and providing ongoing leadership for state and national pandemic responses. He has also managed MPox outbreaks in New South Wales and served as a designated spokesperson for the NSW Ministry of Health during the pandemic.
Professor Shaban is Co-ordinating Chief Investigator of Project HIRAID Aged Care™, designed to protect older individuals in residential aged care from infections, and co-Chief Investigator for Project HIRAID™, a groundbreaking research program to improve emergency nursing care safety and quality. His work has received major funding from MRFF and NHMRC.

Professor Shaban provides expert witness services and serves as a Professional Member with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of New South Wales. His research has led to the development of Australia's first comprehensive textbook on healthcare-associated infections and infection prevention. He has received numerous awards including the Julie Finucane OAM Medal for Leadership in Emergency Nursing (2023) and the Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence (2021).
